What are the different forms of editing?

 

Editorial Assessment

A lighter, high-level review (like a manuscript critique letter) to spot issues before full developmental work; budget-friendly for early drafts.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing looks at the big picture. It focuses on structure, flow, and how your ideas come together. For fiction, that means character development, pacing, and story arcs. For nonfiction, it’s about organization, clarity, and logical progression. A developmental edit helps strengthen your work’s foundation before fine-tuning the details.

 

Line Editing

Line editing digs into how your writing communicates on a sentence‑by‑sentence level. It focuses on language, tone, and rhythm—refining phrasing, transitions, and emotional impact. Think of it as stylistic sculpting: improving the artistry of your prose while preserving your unique voice.

 

Substantive Editing

A catch-all "heavy lift" that combines developmental and line-level changes for content, style, and clarity—less common as a standalone service.

 

Copyediting/Editing
